The Pit is pleased to present a solo booth by New York based artist Tamara Gonzales.
Although primarily known for her painting and drawing, Gonzales’ practice also incorporates traditional weaving and textiles made in collaboration with local Peruvian artists. The compositions are based on Gonzales’ repeated archetypal motifs found throughout her drawings and paintings. As a Mexican-American artist, Gonzales’ work continually reflects on the histories and cultures of Mesoamerica, and more broadly Latin America, filtered through a contemporary lens. The symbolic compositions are based on Gonzales’ recurring imagery and the negative spaces are filled in with traditional Peruvian patterns that are an integral part of the local religion and history, creating modern totems in search of a new purpose. Similarly using her drawings as a template, she has created new mosaic works on panel for the first time. These pieces are inspired by Mesoamerican tile work and incorporate the same motifs found in her tapestries and paintings.
